Learning Outcome 3 (U21): Be able to pitch ideas on a proposed media product and respond to questions (D1)
LO3 Unit 21: Be able to pitch ideas on a proposed media product and respond to questions
One point, made by the professional, that was useful in helping me to amend my magazine was whether the style of my title suited my target audience. I explained that it helps my magazine stand out by using two different typefaces; unlike other magazines that use a simple typeface, mine gives my magazine a bolder look through the contrast of the typefaces. This is shown by 'Pop' being bold and vibrant to match with the connoted sound; and 'Passion' being written in a script font which gives a softer more caring feel to connect with people's real feelings towards this music.
He then commented on the colours of my title and whether they would complement the main image. He suggested looking into other colours even though pink and purple do associate with vibrant peppy colours. I will research into more colours after I have a main image to ensure that the colours stand out along with the main image, the most visually striking aspect of the front cover. I will take on board this point to ensure my magazine will look visually striking to attract my target audience. The improvements i will make is look into different vibrant colours that would be associated with Pop music and see what will go well with my photos on my magazine.
Another point he made was about the use of uncoated paper, and how it may not be the best idea. The reason I chose uncoated paper was because it can be recycled, which makes it more ethical, and people who are more environmentally friendly may pick my magazine over others that can't be recycled. Before I chose uncoated paper, I was going to pick coated paper but when I found out that it can't be recycled, I thought it would be a better idea to make my magazine recyclable. I will not take this feedback on as I want my magazine to be seen as ethical to others so it can help others make a decision when choosing between pop music magazines.
The next point that was addressed was if, along with the print copy of my magazine, I will produce an online version. I took this point on board and will create an online copy to go with the printed version. This means that people will pay for the print subscription, which costs £50 for a year's subscription and this will include access to the online version rather than £40 just for online. This means my business will gain more income and my audience can access the magazine anywhere using their phone or from reading the print. An improvement that will be made will be ensuring that print copies have access to an online version as well.
Another point raised was whether 17-19 year olds were too old for my magazine, and if my target audience should be younger. The reason I chose this age group is because over 16s are allowed into concerts without someone over the age of 21 accompanying them. The higher end of my target audience will be interested in venue information so when they go to concerts they will know what it is like. I will not change my target audience as I feel it is a good demographic for a sophisticated pop music magazine and the content is more relevant to my specified demographic.
The professional then added If pop music was the right genre to do and if its really concerned with live music. It was then brought to the attention that in the last 5 years pop has risen and become more concerned with live music and playing at big venues such as Wembley. The reason I picked this genre is because of the gap in the market because pop music magazines are aimed at a younger target audience so if I aim at an older audience it means more of a demographic. I will not change my genre as I feel it will become a popular magazine choice for teenagers as they can enjoy their genre while having content related to them.
Another point raised was what do I actually need for my first issue of my magazine. I explained that I will be doing one venue review, one artist interview and one competition/ giveaways. The reason I will do this is so as it will draw my audience in and then I will gradually add more stories and give-away's and competition. To improve i will ensure all my stories are up-to-date
The last point made was that I should use responsive design to put my magazine across all platforms. I will take this point on board and will ensure my magazine is the same online, on an app and print. This information was helpful as I learnt something new that will benefit my magazine.
