Learning Outcome 4 (U3): Be able to carry out post-production techniques and processes for an original media product to a client brief (M4, D1)

LO4 unit 3: Be able to carry out post-production techniques and processes for an original media product to a client brief.

(I have exported both my front cover and double page spread as a JPEG.)

My magazine front cover and double page spread both meet the client brief due to the fact they both focus on a vibrant music scene (Pop music).  This is an implicit demand. The reason my genre fits into my brief is because pop music is an abbreviation of popular music and as i have aimed my magazine towards teenagers aged 14-19 they are seen as a more vibrant age as they have more energy compared to adults or children.

The front cover meets the client brief due to the colour scheme being filled with bright and vivid colours such as blue, yellow, pink and purple. This relates to the client brief as it presents pop as a vibrant music scene due to the vivid colours that will stand out in shops. Also due to the fact i have aimed it at teenagers who are vibrant and stand out and my target audience will recognise it. An example of this is the bright blue background making the front cover pop therefore linking to the explicit demands of the brief.

An implicit demand from the brief was to target towards a vibrant audience. This means teenagers as they are young and have most energy to give out. I have shown it is targeted at teenagers through the use of my main feature article artist being a teenagers herself. This means that my audience can relate to her therefore relating to my brief as a vibrant audience.

Another implicit demand is the genre being pop. I decided this would fit into the brief of a vibrant music scene. I chose this genre as there was a ga in the market for this age groups pop music magazine so i though if i could fill it with a vibrant music scenes like pop genre my magazine will get more views.

Use of post production techniques

I used the magnetic lasso to cut out the background of my image.  This is so I could only have my model on my front cover as shown. The reason I isolated her image is because the picture was taken on a brick wall which creates an urban connotation to the picture which would be more suggestive of genres such Rap, Grime and Drill. However placing her on a plain, bright colour background helps create that upbeat feel and gives it a pop music vibe. It is also more feminine and so will relate to  my target audience. This effect means that  it shares the look of other pop music magazines that use a plain colour background. This will mean that my magazine is immediately identifiable as pop genre.

I also used the ellipse tool to create puffs, this is so I could make the pull quote stand out on the double page spread. This means my target audience will be immediately drawn in to read the article on my double page spread and then go on to read the rest of my magazine because they are interested. This tool relates to my client brief as its creating a circle which is going to stand out to teenagers which is an implicit demand on my brief.

I also used the text box tool to create boxes and align the text on my magazine. An example of this is the cover lines on the side of the magazine, I put them in a text box each and then alined them so they all matched each other and looked neat. The reason I did this was because when pop magazines do a front cover their stories go around the sides so I thought I would mimic the trend and lay it out the same. This relates to my brief as it is creating stories about the vibrant music scene in north London meaning I create a north London pop music magazine.

I also used the magic wand tool on  the front cover. This was to get the little bits of the background from the original picture out which was a brick wall as that made the picture look urban and as this is a pop music magazine if my model was in front of a brick wall it would look more like a grime rap or drill magazine. So to keep with the theme I used this tool to ensure that the whole background was cut out and could be placed on a coloured background. This relates to my brief as the background is now a vibrant colour relating to the vibrant music scene idea of the brief.

I used the cropping tool to crop my original image from a long shot to a mid shot and I cropped most of the background out. This was because when pop music magazines have images of the artists they use a mid shot or a close up. I thought if I did in the same way people will recognise my magazine as a pop music magazine. This relates to my brief as I am ensuring my magazine front cover is recognised as a pop music magazine relating to it being a vibrant music scene and aimed at teenagers.

I also used the magic wand tool on my double page spread. This was so I could completely get the brick wall background out of the picture so I could place it on an upbeat colour to conotate pop music. The reason I cut the image out of the brick wall is because  the brick wall made the picture look urban as if it were from a Grime Rap or Drill magazine. However, as I am creating an image  for a pop magazine, I put the image on a coloured background to give it that pop vibe. This relates to my client brief  as it shows the upbeat and vibrant feel that the magazine is through the use of a coloured background.

I used the text box tool for my double page spread. This is so I could create my body copy story that will relate to my 15-19 year old girl target audience. I drew them in two columns to it would have the convention of magazine. This relates to my client brief as it is using the codes and conventions of a magazine by having a body copy in column like many other magazines.

I used the magnetic lasso to cut out around my artist's body in order for the image to be placed onto the plain coloured background. This was to ensure all of the wall was cut out and to give it that pop vibe look as well as to make the double page spread more exciting and vibrant. This relates to the explicit needs of my client brief as it is using the use of vibrant colours to connote the vibrant music scene.

I used the cropping tool in order to zoom in on the main image on the double page spread. This zoom meant that you could only see the artist. I used the magnetic lasso and the magic wand tool to get all the wall background out to make it look like a pop music magazine double page spread filled with colour with lots of pictures surrounding the main image, which creates the explicit demands of the brief that we are following of a vibrant music scene.
