At the tender age of 18 years old, Jess has already achieved what many fail to do in a lifetime. Not only has she released a best-selling single that has been top of the charts for nine weeks – overtaking Ariana Grande and Dua Lipa in the process – she has also been busy in the studio recording her debut album. On top of this, she is a passionate vegan, and has released her own recipe book, and is currently an ambassador for The Young Women’s Trust.

Pop Passion caught up with her in Camden Town before her show at The Roundhouse.

How do you feel about topping Ariana Grande and Dua Lipa in the charts?

Well, growing up, I loved their music and would constantly listen to them on repeat while in my room doing school work or getting ready for parties … so seeing that on the charts gave me a shock. I literally screamed at the top of my voice! It made me so happy to see me up there with all those big names.

If you spoke to your 15 year old self, what advice would you give?

At the age of 15, I suffered with a lot of anxiety due to GCSEs.  My self-esteem was really low. However, singing got me through that rough time period and I never would have dreamed of being in this spot. So I would tell everyone out there if you are going through a rough time period, never doubt yourself. You will pull through and succeed in your dreams.

How do you balance being an ambassador for the Young Women’s Trust and being an upcoming star?

Well, it’s not that hard but I will always prioritize the charity over my singing, as I want to help as many people as I possibly can before I help myself become a star.

Where do you see yourself in the next 5 years?

Somewhere big, hopefully! My dream has always been to play at Capital FM’s summer time ball after I went to it at the age of 14. I looked up to all those stars and wanted to be exactly like them! However, I never thought I would get this close.

When was the first time you really knew you could sing and that you had this passion for music?

It started when I was 7 and I went to see the musical Matilda. I loved it so much I sang all the songs in the car in my room and at school and eventually my realized I could sing. I went to singing lessons and sang in school concerts and I even got cast as Matilda in my school show at the age of 13. During my GCSE year, I decided to take music, drama and dance.  I achieved enough to stay at my sixth form and carry on with A level music and dance. This came as a surprise to me as I went through so much anxiety I thought I was going to fail. In music A level, we went on a trip to perform at a concert with other schools.  I sang my heart out and had an amazing time and at the end a man came up to me and asked if I had any demos … so I showed him some of my own songs on Spotify and he loved them and offered to take me under his wing. That’s why I’m here now.

Who has been your biggest influence?

Well, for me it has to be my mum. She has helped me through so much. And being a single parent, she has been so independent and amazing helping my sister and me out through everything, and showing us what a strong woman she can be. I love her so much! This is what got me into being ambassador of the women’s charity, as I want to empower women as she empowered my sister and me. And if it wasn’t for her confidence boosting, I don’t think I would be in this position today … so thank you, Mum.

If you could give your fans one message from this interview, what would it be?

The message I would give my fans is to always believe in yourself and don’t put yourself down. Believe in what you can do, and if there are obstacles, don’t give up. It’s only one bump in the road! You will overcome it, and who knows whether you want to be a lawyer, a doctor or a singer …you will make it just by putting that hard work in and believing in yourself. And if you are suffering with mental health issues, don’t bottle them up. Talk to someone even if it’s a friend, a parent, a teacher or someone professional. Get the words out, because the more you bottle it up, the worse you feel.

I will not use this picture in my magazine as I feel I need to use a picture that shows my model being happy to connote the music genre with.

I won't use this picture in my magazine as the pose isn't what Iwant and because she moved when i took the picture it makes her head look blurry.

I will use this picture in my magazine as it shows her looking happy and trendy which coyotes wit what the pop genre is trying to convey. I will use it on my double page spread.

I won't use this picture as she is not looking at the camera which gives her a weird look on her face.

I won't use this in my magazine as her head moved which made her head look blurry

I won't use this picture in my magazine she is standing in the wrong position and showing the wrong facial expression

I will use this pic n the front cover of my magazine but I will crop it to make it a mid shot. and I will cut her out and place her on a colourful background.

I will use this picture in my magazine on the double page spread. The reason I'm using it is because the way she's posing makes her look cool and trendy. I will crop it however so the person walking by on the right isn't in it. I also chose this pic because it says camden on the sign behind so it shows I'm in north London.

I won't use this picture as her eyes are shut which makes the picture look bad and in magazines pictures like this would not be used.

I won't use this picture in my magazine as even though the pout face looks like how pop stars would look I don't like the angle it was taken and I don't like the position she is standing.

I won't use this picture in my magazine as they way she is standing makes her look awkward and we want her looking confident as thats what my magazine is portraying (being yourself and being confident inwho you are).

I will use this image in my magazine as it shows the camden canals and it shows her looking dominant and proud on the bridge

I will not use this picture as it is very similar to the other one just the other one is better quality.

I won't use this image as they way she is positioned I don't like I prefer her sideways on

I will use this image in my magazine as she is posing as if she is trendy and confident and thats what I want my magazine to portray.

Here is me setting up the camera and tripod for the photoshoot. I firstly put the tripod up as shown in this first picture. I screwed the shoe into the camera, and affixed this to the tripod so my pictures would be steady.

I then took the pictures in three locations

Location 1 was the roundhouse in chalk farm. As I was shooting outdoors, I had the camera on its automatic setting, meaning that the exposure and aperture were suited to the location. I stood at a distance of about 2.5 meters from my model and used natural lighting.

Location 2 was the stables market in camden
As this location was slightly darker i used flash to ensure the lighting was correct. I stood about 50 cm away from my model and gained a long shot from it.

Location 3 bridge overlooking the canals in camden.

I did not use a tripod in this location as the bridge is narrow and i did not want to block the path with a tripod. i stood about 50cm away from my model and used natural lighting and no flash.

Documenting and software setup

Firstly I opened Photoshop and clicked file then new which then presented me with this ...

I changed the setting to international paper and selected A4 as the size of my front cover which then gave me a blank document.

Codes and Conventions
My photos for my magazine met the codes and conventions of a North London pop music magazine due to the way my model posed, how she was dressed and where the photos were taken. My model's poses showed her to be peppy and also sassy giving it that iconic pop music style seen on many other magazines such as Billboard. We can see her standing up looking dominant in the middle of the double page spread to show her as an empowering woman and giving that smug pop star look as if she's showing off that she made it big. My model is wearing trendy clothing relating to the pop music genre as we see her wearing a popular on trend style from this year meaning she is up-to-date with everything and wants to remain popular much like our pop music magazine following trends and staying popular hence the name pop music (popular music). She also resembles Dua Lipa who is a pop singer which also gives the hint that this is a pop music magazine My pictures were also taken in Camden which is in North London, therefore fitting the codes and conventions as people will recognise the places and then realise it is a north London Pop music magazine. This is why I took photos at The Roundhouse, Camden Market and Camden Lock Bridge.

The style of writing that I chose for my magazine front cover and double page spread is written in a format so people recognise its a North London pop music magazine. For example on my front cover it states as a coverlid "what is the Roundhouse really like?" This shows that it is in fact a North London Music magazine. The title then gives away that it is a pop magazine due to the fact its called Pop Passion, therefore revealing to the audience it is a North London pop music magazine. My body copy also relates to the codes and conventions of a North London Pop music magazine as we see this respect for other people come in. Unlike in rap grime and drill where mesoginistic language is used, you can tell my magazine is pop as it is accepting and kind to all and makes you want to embrace who you are. We see this when my artist thanks her mum for being there for helping her through everything and how  being a single parent was hard but she got through it and raised a brilliant family. All of this shows the audience that my magazine is from the pop genre and includes artists who embrace and accept their mother and are proud to try and break the stigma of being a single mother. This kind of attitude would not be found in a Rap, Drill or Grime magazine as these concentrate on and celebrate violence, gangs and past trauma.
