lo1 (u21)Be able to generate ideas for an original media product based on a client brief (p1, m1)

In this task I have been asked to create a magazine front cover and double page spread based in north London. It will include information about the artists and venues in north London where they would play. I will produce a plan, a pitch, and produce and edit the sample pages for my magazine.

Learning outcome 1(U21): Be able to generate ideas for an original media product based on a client brief.

Explicit demands:
This means what the brief is specifically asking. This includes...

  • Making a front page
  • A double page spread
  • Creating a pitch
  • Online and print based
  • Based in north London
  • Original content
  • Creating a Proposal
  • Editing my content
Implicit demands:
This is what I need to infer from the brief such as...
  • Target audience being 16-22
  • Music genre would be pop, grime, rap, indie, as suggested by the phrase "vibrant music"
  • format for proposal

My ideas

IDEA 1: GENRE
My first idea is genre-based, and would be pop. This would lean towards the target audience of 15-19 year old girls. My brief clearly states it should be a "vibrant music scene". I would connote this with conventional pop language and colours. However, I feel that girls around the ages of 15-19 enjoy pop music more than boys as boys usually connote rougher behaviour which would link to grime. This magazine will include information about venues where people would be playing such as Dua Lipa playing at Alexandra Palace in April 2018. It will also include information about artists and if new music is arising. This would be the trendy magazines that teenagers follow as they want to be part of all the latest things such as fashion and music so it should market well. The price of my magazine will be £4.99 for each issue. Some article ideas would be about new music coming out who its buy and what albums are coming out. My colour scheme will be pinks and purples as hey are eye catching colours and will make the magazine noticable. My unique selling point will be 15-19 year olds as I feel there is a gap in the market where teenagers stop enjoying pop as its seen as childish. However I want people to carry on that passion for pop music when they are a teenager.

IDEA 2: ARTISTS
For my second would focus solely on North London-based pop artists. I would need to use North London based artists as my magazine is based in North London. I would need people from the past 6 years as my magazine is based at 13-16 year olds so using people before that may be irrelevant to them as it wouldn't be classed as trendy popular music. Artists would include Dua Lipa, Adele, Stormzy etc. Using artists like this would attract the North London demographic as some stories could be based on where they grew up and went to school which may relate to some of the target audience as many of them are still in school. Also due to the school system artists who live in the uk can help people who are finishing school follow their paths if they want to become singers by guiding them to do it. I could also use upcoming musicians from open mic nights in clubs to create stories and use images of to help create my magazine. The price of my magazine will be £3.00.  Some content included in my magazine will be reviews on venues, where artists are playing in north London.

IDEA 3: VENUES
Venues that would be included in my
magazine would be those based in North London and the pop gigs coming up and the dates in that area. Some venues I would include would be The Roundhouse(camden), KOKO(Camden), Wembley arena (Wembley), O2 Arena(Greenwich), Alexandra Palace (Between Muswell Hill and Wood Green) etc. Using these venues will help my target audience know when and where the can go and see their favourite artists. Due to the fact my Target Audience are 16 -19 they are allowed to go to concerts(usually people under the age of 16 can't go to concerts without an adult) so this information is important as they can go.
Information about Venues are important as it gives people information about where their favourite artist is playing. My magazine can also use up to date stories about clubs in north London such as KOKO closing down. The price of my magazine will be £3.50.

Conclusion:
In conclusion, I'm going to create a Pop Magazine targeted at 15-19 year old girls and base it around types of artists in the genre and venues in the north London area. The reason I have aimed it towards this demographic is due to the fact 15-19 year olds can go to concerts without an adult when you are 16 however you are still allowed in at age 14. I chose the genre pop as it creates a vibrant music scene much like my brief is asking me to do.
