Target Audience
My primary target audience will be teenage girls ages 15-19, of mixed ethnicities and part of the social grade BC1C2. I chose this target audience because at this age, this age group starts to become independent and start following trends. The aim is for my magazine to influence 15-19 years olds to listen to pop music and enjoy the vibrant music scene that my magazine will celebrate.
By encompassing a slightly younger age bracket, it allows the target audience to feel included with the current pop scene by listening to pop artists and finding out information about them.
My secondary target audience will be younger sisters of the primary target audience, as little sisters often look up to their older siblings and want to be like them. Even though they can't gain entry into clubs or concerts they can read about the music, the venues and the up-and-coming artists.
In terms of my tertiary audience, I will target people who enjoy pop/want to follow certain artists. Due to pop music celebrating people from within the LGBT community, my magazine will also target this audience. In my magazine I will share artists' coming-out stories and details of different venues such as gay clubs and bars.
Purpose
The purpose of my magazine is to spread new trends around and inform people about new upcoming pop music. I also feel there is a gap in the market for this type of magazine as those already in publication usually target a much younger age bracket. As I will be making a more sophisticated magazine, it will inform and entertain my readers.
Form
My magazine would take the form online and print. People who want it online would be charged a subscription and would then pay through the website using their card details and then they can access the magazine. My magazine will cost £4.99 as it is a reasonable cost for a monthly magazine and easy for teenagers to afford. I will also offer students at university 10% off if they have a student card
My magazine will also be sold in shops and can also be signed up for and be delivered to your door. It will be light weight so it is easy to carry around will be recyclable to appeal to those who want to care for the environment.
Font styles
For my double page spread I will be using a sans serif font. The reason I chose this is because it is easy to read. Aires give text a sophisticated vibe and would be good to use in a newspaper as its very serious. I want my magazine to be sophisticated but still give the young and trendy vibe this is why I will be using sans serif font.
Some cover line ideas could be about tips the artist follow, venue reviews (use a pull quote) and upcoming music. These will guarantee to grab the attention of my target audience and make them buy an issue.
Masthead
I want my magazine to be bold and outgoing to keep with the idea of pop music being loud and trendy. Here are some ideas of fonts for my magazine (POP PASSION) to look like.

On the word pop i have chosen the font Feedback loud. It gives the title the idea of loud volume due to the fact it has sound waves through the title. This connotes with pop and loud noises which is why I chose this font just for this word. The word passion is written in bentosa which is a script font it gives the title more of an informal, hand made connotation. However in my opinion the word pop is difficult to read and may not attract the audience to my magazine.
House music font gives the title of the magazine a bold vibe and catches the attention of readers as it is clear and bold and the chunky letters lets it be seen easily. However it is very simple and may not stand out clearly among other magazine titles. It also gives the magazine and electronic vibe which is not necessarily what you would associate pop with.
This is my final idea:
I have chosen to call my magazine Pop Passion. The reason I have picked this title is because the word pop associates with my music genre so people will recognise this as a pop music magazine and passion shows peoples real love for this music. The title uses two fonts. Pop is written in prisma, is in red and is the biggest font on the front cover. This is so it stands out to my target audience as the genre they are looking for. Passion is written in a script font called Bentosa it is positioned under pop and slightly slanted. This looks aesthetically pleasing and will stand out when the target audience want to buy it. Passion will be the second biggest font on the front cover as it is part of the title yet the word pop is more important and asserts its dominance on the page because its stating what the magazine is all about. Also the alliteration of the title makes it easy to remember.
Bodycopy
For my body copy i picked the font coolveltica. The reason i picked this font is because it is simple and plain and easy to read. I thought this would be a perfect font for my body copy because if its easy to read people will the read the whole story and not give up because they can't see it therefore making them read more of the magazine.
Genre of my product
My magazine will be based on the pop genre. The reason I have chosen this genre is because it is up-to-date, trendy music that teenagers will be interested in. I also think there is a gap in the market for teenagers liking pop music so I would like to make the magazine suited for teenagers about the pop genre. Not many venues in North London hold pop music events as it's mainstream music, however Wembley arena hold more mainstream music events such as Little Mix, The Summertime Ball. This is because it is a big venue and people will fill the arena and stadium. It is easily accessed by public transport.
Content
My magazine will include articles about all new pop artists, music and trends. The reason I have chosen this content is because pop music is an abbreviation for popular music so it would make sense for all of my articles to be up-to-date and new to keep to the theme of my idea of a trendy magazine. In my magazine I will also include venue information. This means I will write about different venues in North London, what is happening in them and which artists will be preforming there. For example an article could be the club KOKO is closing down in 2019. Another example of what will be included in my magazine is competitions and give aways for tickets and meet and greets for artists of the pop genre. The magazine will also include features on up-and-coming north London pop bands and artists.
My magazine would also include advertisement related to the artists such as perfumes and clothing to help pay for the publishing of the magazine and to help sell the products.
I want to encourage and inform teenage girls on how to be trendy and how they can use their own individual personalities to follow new ideas.
Article ideas
Due to my magazine being based in north London all of my articles will be based there. Some ideas would include...
For the purpose of my first edition I will be conducting an interview with an upcoming Pop artist.
Venues- I would write reviews and stories about different venues around north london such as the round house, KOKO, Alexandra palace etc. This is so people know where near them they can watch their favourite artists play and possibly see new people play. I would also include travel information on how to get there from barnet as that is where I am basing it on.
Artists- My articles would include what new artists are upcoming, tours and dates from artists, and fashion and tips from artists in North London. These articles will help attract my primary target audience as girls tend to be more into fashion and trends than boys so articles about their favourite artists and how they keep relevant will entertain them.
Reviews- I would do articles on reviews of concerts to help people who read it know what is in store when seeing their favourite artists or at a venue.
Competitions- This will be done in every issue and people can win concert tickets, meet and greets, the new album.
Q&A's- This would be with the north London pop artists and this way the audience can find out about their favourite artists.
Tips- Gives people ideas of what musicians do and how they made it big.
Equipment and personnel
Equipment
The equipment I will need is a camera to take pictures for my magazine as it needs to be visual to keep the reader interested. I will also need lights and a background as it will make the pictures more interesting. I will also need a computer to edit on, a tripod. All of these equipment will help me create a magazine suitable for my audience of 15-19 year old girls.
Personnel
For my magazine I would need a camera operator, a model, an editor, a lighting operator, hair and makeup team, custom team, publisher, journalist. Each of these people will ensure each monthly issue is done. For example the journalists create stories from the artists and the editor will ensure everything in the article is relevant and suitable. Then the photographer will photograph the models who in this case are the artists that have been styled by the hair and make-up team and the costume designers and the editor will place their pictures in the magazine.
Distribution and marketing methods
My magazine will be marketed through social media. Teenagers use social media everyday so placing adverts on Facebook, twitter, Instagram and snapchat will help my magazine get noticed by my primary target audience. The implicit requirements my brief asks me to do is to target a vibrant music scene this would make me want to target teenagers as they are a are young and have the most amount of energy therefore connoting with being vibrant. This is why I will market through social media as it is where teenagers express themselves and get themselves noticed much like the word "vibrant" it wants to catch your eye so marketing on social media will will catch teenagers attention.
These marketing methods can be targeted towards my primary and secondary audience as in this day and age a vast majority of teenagers are on social media so it shall be seen by teenagers catching my primary target audience attention first then my secondary.
I will also use billboard adverts to attract the 17-19 year olds who are driving. This would be a marketing method which I would use when the company accumulates more money as billboards are expensive and as my magazine has just started I wouldn't have that much income available to begin with but when we raise the income we could have a billboard ad and then target the older target audience. This meets the needs of my brief as I am specifically thinking about the vibrant audience the implicit demands ask for and as the 17-19 year olds can drive this is how I can catch their attention while listening to pop music.
My distribution methods will be passed out in north London newsagents so when non-driving teenagers are waiting for the bus after school they could pop in and buy a copy and read it for their bus journey home. This is targeting my primary audience as teenagers would usually go into this shop to buy items such as sweets and drinks after their day at school so this will catch their eye on the shelf when walking in
My magazine will come out monthly at the price of £4.99 an issue and will stay this price for every issue. The format it will be available in is print and digital as I stated before people will pay on the website and receive a copy of my magazine.
Mood board

My mood board is going to influence me as it has big British musicians and north London venues. This will then give ideas of what my magazine could be about. I could do an article on venues or artists to show teenagers in north London what they could listen to and where they could go and see a great concert. This gives me ideas of what is going on in the pop music industry in north London and can help me do interviews of new stars and where the best places are to see these people.
Sketch

On my sketch it is clearly laid out the main items of a front cover of a magazine. For example a strap line, masthead, headline, coverlid, barcode, price, puff, main image. These are all important features of a magazine and I shall be using the majority of these on my magazine. This will attract my target audience As the capital letters would stand out on the magazine and will attract their attention to the top of the page and they will begin to read in a Z pattern.
Competition
Due to the fact my magazine primarily focuses on the vibrant music scene in North London some people may not buy it due to the fact it is not relevant to them. People may choose to buy bigger brands such as Billboard, Seventeen, We Love Pop, Smash Hits, Q and Tiger Beat. as they are well known magazine companies and are sold all over the country. This can cause threat to my magazine as mine is only based in north London and people who live outside of north London won't buy it however the bigger brand magazines are sold all over so other people in other places will feel included and buy it as they feel more relevant. Billboards price is £7.54 an issue, Seventeen magazine is £5.37 an issue and We Love Pop is £5.99. I have made my magazines price £4.99 as its not ridiculously expensive for a magazine and teenagers can easily afford it. Since it is cheaper than the other magazines teenagers may buy it making it a direct competition with other magazines. If i could change anything about these magazines i would say that we love pop and seventeen could target and older audience as it makes teenagers think that pop is for young children so they go off this type of music. However i would change billboards magazine by making it more busy and vibrant to connote with the music style however sticking with the simple colour scheme.
Learning outcome 2(U21): Be abel to create a proposal and pitch for an original media product based on a given brief.
